COURSE

THE SCOOP

  1. Both races start and finish near the Grandstand in the center of the Altamont Fairgrounds.
  2. The 13.1M is a USATF certified (NY20006JG) loop course.
  3. The 5K is an out & back on Brandle Road, using the first 1.55M of the longer races.
  4. The event does cross railroad tracks. These tracks are inactive on weekends.

COURSE CUT-OFFS

The Half Marathon requires that you maintain a 16:00 per mile pace to continue on the course (and an entire course cut-off time of 3:30).

WATER STOPS & TOILETS

We strongly encourage that you provide your own water containing device. (ie. Bottle, hydration pack, etc.) Yes, we will have cups for you if needed, but for the sake of reducing litter and waste, we discourage that you rely exclusively on them. These stations will all provide water - any additional items/nutrition you must provide yourself. You are permitted to receive support from your friends/family. (There is no on-course water provided for the 5K.)

Toilets

In addition to ample portable toilets being available at the Altamont Fairgrounds (start/finish), at least one portable toilet will be available at every water stop.

VOLUNTEER

We welcome you to help us make race day special. Our primary need is for assistance with course marshals - you get front row seats to the race and get to cheer for the runners! Help is also needed with other tasks as listed here.

FAQ

YOUR PASSION IS OUR PURPOSE - and we kept racing alive as an in-person sport in 2020 and 2021.

Yes, for those curious, here are several documents that provide you with the level of planning that went into our permit applications and logistical operations for many of our races. They are lengthy but surely informative and welcome you "behind the scenes" into how and why we gave it our all to keep racing alive in 2020.

Race Directing in the Age of COVID-19
An engaging article written by Josh Merlis, the owner of ARE Event Productions and director of this event and others, that alternates between the specifics of how their 8/29/2020 Druthers Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon was held as well as the deeper realities impacting events and how it relates to other activities that are permitted.

Hairy Gorilla 13.1M & Squirrelly 6M - Logistical Proposal for NYS Parks
This is what we submitted to receive permission to host our Halloween 2020 race and not be restricted to the 50 person 'mass gathering' limit.

We created and held this event during the pandemic, in the fall of 2020, specifically designing it to conform to all CDC and NYS Guidelines. As we were able to hold it then, along with still holding in-person editions of every event we (ARE Event Productions) own in 2020 and since then, rest assured that we are unwaveringly committed to making this event happen again.

In the unexpected event that the race is canceled by a mandate beyond our control, everyone will be switched to a virtual participant.

Your registration is NON-REFUNDABLE unless you choose the optional registration insurance at the time of registering.

At the time of registering for the race, for an additional $12, you can purchase registration insurance which provides for a no questions asked refund of your fee paid (not including the $12 nor the processing fee) if requested by Thur, 11/21 at 11:59:59PM ET.

If the event is ultimately canceled, your refund is processed automatically the week of 11/25 without you having to request it.

If the event is not canceled but you desire not to attend/are not able to attend, you must request your refund prior to the deadline above by emailing director@upstateclassic.com requesting your refund. The insurance does not apply for requests made after 12AM ET on Fri, 11/22.

If you do not purchase registration insurance, your entry is non-refundable per the details here.

We welcome participants in wheelchairs, both using pushrims and handcycles. Strollers are not permitted on the course, nor are dogs.
It is our intention to hold the event regardless of the weather conditions, even if snowing. Dress appropriately and enjoy the ability to participate. If the forecast or conditions are excessively poor, in conjunction with local officials, a modification to the course or cancellation may be deemed safest. We will do everything in our power to prevent the full cancellation of the event; unfortunately if it must be canceled due to weather, there will be no refunds (unless you have the registration insurance) and you will be switched to a virtual participant.
Your best options for hotels are about a 20 minute drive from the venue (Altamont Fairgrounds). There is no host hotel. Here are some of the closest hotels:
You can search here for hotels. There are ample options in the Albany/Colonie area. You may also want to consider searching Airbnb for options in Altamont/Guilderland/Voorheesville.
We appreciate you taking the time to read this entire website. It covers everything about the event, and now, more than ever, it is vital that you are an informed participant.

Race week we will release the Participant Handbook, which will go into further detail about how race day will flow. We also highly recommend following us on Facebook, as we share information there/reiterate important things to note.

Ultimately everything you need to know gets added to this website. We will also email it to registered participants and update our FB page, but we recognize that an email may slip through the cracks (ie. you don't see it) or you're not on Facebook. But you are on this website - so please check it regularly, especially in the final few weeks.
